PC board (control board)
The computer that runs the heater. It also stores the parameters that describe your exact unit, which is what makes replacing it more than a parts swap.
What it does
Everything. It reads the flow sensor and every thermistor, drives the fan, opens the gas valve, watches the flame rod, and decides when to shut down. It is also where the unit’s identity lives: model and BTU rating, natural gas or propane, altitude band, indoor or outdoor, whether a recirculation pump is connected.
Why it fails
Boards fail from heat, from vibration on solder joints, and — the one worth paying attention to — from moisture. Rinnai’s troubleshooting repeatedly asks the technician to inspect wiring harnesses for damp or wet connections inside the cabinet. If water is getting to the electronics of a gas appliance, the failed board is the symptom, not the problem.
Why replacing it is not a straight swap
The new board arrives blank. Rinnai supplies a data transfer cable to copy parameters from the old board; when that is not possible, every parameter is programmed manually from the replacement instructions. Get it wrong and the unit runs on the wrong gas type or the wrong altitude setting — which surfaces later as an overheat or gas valve adjustment code. An incomplete transfer has its own error code, 21.
What a replacement usually costs
The board itself is commonly $250-600, plus one to two hours of labor and the programming. On an out-of-warranty unit that has already had other faults, this is the repair where replacing the heater deserves a serious comparison — ask for the quote in writing.
