How to Descale a Tankless Water Heater

Scale in the heat exchanger is the number one cause of tankless water heater faults, and flushing it out is the one repair most homeowners can genuinely do themselves. Here is the procedure, including the steps that are specific to Rinnai's SENSEI RX.

Moderate — some experience helps ~90 minutes

Every gallon of hard water that passes through your heater leaves a little calcium behind on the hot side of the heat exchanger. That deposit does not block the pipe — it insulates it. Heat that should be crossing into your water stays in the metal instead, so the unit fires harder for the same result, the exhaust runs hotter, and eventually a safety sensor stops the whole thing.

That is the chain behind an enormous share of tankless error codes. On Rinnai’s SENSEI RX it has its own dedicated sensor and its own lockout: the unit shows LC when it detects scale, and SS when the service timer says it is simply due. Left long enough, it surfaces as an overheat code (14) or a high exhaust temperature code (54) — and Rinnai states plainly that heat exchanger damage caused by scale is not covered by the warranty.

Rinnai’s water quality guideline for these units is a total hardness up to 200 mg/L. If you do not know your hardness, your water utility publishes it, or a $10 test strip kit will tell you in a minute.

Flush immediately, whatever the schedule says, if the unit is showing LC, LC0–LC9, 00, or SS.

What you need

  • A submersible pump and two washing-machine hoses (sold together as a tankless flush kit, roughly $60–100 — or often available to rent)
  • A 5-gallon bucket
  • Four gallons of undiluted, food-grade white vinegar. Rinnai specifies virgin white vinegar; do not substitute a stronger acid, which attacks the metal you are trying to save
  • Isolation/service valves already fitted under the unit. If your installer did not fit them, this is not a DIY job until a plumber adds them

The procedure

The sequence below follows Rinnai’s own instructions for the SENSEI RX. Other brands and older Rinnai units follow the same shape — isolate, circulate vinegar for an hour, rinse, clean the filter — but always work from the manual for your model.

  1. Shut it down. Turn off the gas supply at the manual valve below the unit and turn the controller off.
  2. Isolate the heater. Close the hot and cold shutoff valves on the service valve kit.
  3. Connect the hoses. Pump outlet hose to the cold water service valve; drain hose to the hot water service valve.
  4. Fill the pail with four gallons of white vinegar, and put both the drain hose and the pump inlet hose into it.
  5. Open both service valves so the loop runs through the heat exchanger.
  6. Put the SENSEI RX into descaling mode. Remove the front panel (two screws, two latches), find the A and B buttons on the PC board at the bottom of the unit, press B for one second until the display shows dES, then press AdES starts blinking.
  7. Run the pump for at least an hour at about four gallons per minute. The display counts down the remaining minutes from 60; it pauses whenever the unit stops detecting flow, so a break does not cost you the cycle. When it finishes, the display shows rnS and the unit beeps.
  8. Rinse. Stop the pump. Take the free end of the drain hose out of the pail and put it in a sink or outside. Close the cold service valve and open the cold shutoff valve — not the hot one — and let clean water run through for five minutes.
  9. Clean the inlet filter. Close the cold shutoff valve again, remove the in-line filter at the cold water inlet, clear out any residue you flushed loose, refit it, and reopen the valve. Then close the hot service valve and open the hot shutoff valve.
  10. Back to normal. Press the power button — the display shows End — disconnect the hoses, refit the front panel, restore the gas supply, and press the power button twice on the controller.

After the flush

On a SENSEI RX, completing the flush in dES mode clears the LC code by itself. If it does not, Rinnai’s hard reset is pressing the A and B buttons on the PC board together for five seconds, which returns the LC counter to zero. To clear the SS service reminder instead, hold the A button until SS disappears.

When not to do this yourself

  • If the unit is showing code 14 or 54. Those mean a safety sensor has already tripped, and Rinnai pairs the flush with an inspection of the heat exchanger for hot spots, cracks, and discoloration. Flushing a heat exchanger that is already damaged does not undo the damage.
  • If there are no isolation valves. Adding them is a plumbing job.
  • If you are not comfortable shutting off the gas at the manual valve. Nothing in this procedure touches a gas line, but you do need to close that valve first and open it after.

Making it happen less often

Descaling treats the symptom. If your water is above about 7 grains per gallon, Rinnai’s own recommendation moves to treating the supply — a softener or a scale-inhibiting conditioner — and above 12 grains per gallon it stops being a recommendation. That is the difference between flushing once a year and replacing a heat exchanger early.
