Exhaust gas temperature too high. A staged safety response, not a simple shutdown. Rinnai documents that when exhaust temperature passes 163°F the heater reduces its firing rate, and only if the exhaust is still above 163°F after 120 seconds does it shut down and flash code 54. Can I just flush it myself and clear code 54?
Flushing may well be the fix, but code 54 is not the moment for a first DIY flush. Rinnai pairs it with checking the heat exchanger for hot spots and damage, and with vent and gas checks — if the exchanger is already damaged, flushing it does not undo that.
Will treating my water stop this happening again?
Rinnai says so directly on this code: if scale caused it, treat the water supply to prevent future issues. Above roughly 12 grains per gallon, Rinnai considers softening or conditioning a requirement, not a suggestion.
Is 163°F not a normal exhaust temperature?
Not for a condensing unit. A SENSEI RX is designed to pull so much heat out of the flue gas that it condenses; a hot exhaust means that heat is not being transferred.
