Rinnai SENSEI RX Code 10

Air supply or exhaust blocked, or the condensate trap is full. The heater cannot move combustion air the way it expects to. On the SENSEI RX the same code also covers a condensate trap that has backed up — a feature of the condensing generation that Rinnai's older non-condensing units do not have. Rinnai's list of causes runs from a frozen condensate line and a dirty inlet air filter through vent obstructions to a failing fan motor.

What you can safely check

Before anything else: if you smell gas, stop here, leave, and call your gas utility.

  1. Follow the condensate drain line from the bottom of the unit. If it is kinked, blocked, or frozen where it leaves the building, condensate backs up into the trap and shuts the heater down.
  2. Clean the inlet air filter behind the front panel, top right of the cabinet — see our air filter guide for the exact steps.
  3. Go outside and look at the vent terminal: snow, leaves, a bird's nest, or a dryer vent blowing into it will all do this.
  4. Do not run the unit with any vent section disconnected, and do not take vent pipe apart yourself. If the code survives the three checks above, book a professional.

Frequently asked questions

Can a frozen condensate line really stop the heater?

Yes. Rinnai documents it directly: if the drain line clogs or freezes, condensate backs up into the trap inside the cabinet and the unit shuts down to prevent spillage, setting code 10.

The code cleared after I cleaned the air filter. Am I done?

Probably, but note how fast it comes back. A filter that clogs again within weeks usually means the unit is pulling dusty air — worth mentioning at the next service.

Is code 10 dangerous?

The heater shutting down is the safe outcome — it stops rather than burn with restricted air. What is not safe is running it with the vent disturbed, or repeatedly resetting past a genuine blockage.
