Rinnai tankless water heater code 10
Your series decides which reading applies. Across the 4 Rinnai series documented here, code 10 is listed as air supply or exhaust blockage (2 series) and air supply or exhaust blocked, or the condensate trap is full (2 series). Find your series in the table below, where those readings route to a professional.
What code 10 means on each Rinnai series
| Series | What it means | Verdict | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-SENSEI | Air supply or exhaust blockage | Call a pro | $0–$900 |
| RH180 Hybrid | Air supply or exhaust blockage | Call a pro | $0–$900 |
| SENSEI | Air supply or exhaust blocked, or the condensate trap is full | Call a pro | $0–$900 |
| SENSEI RX | Air supply or exhaust blocked, or the condensate trap is full | Call a pro | $0–$900 |
Each row opens the full page for that generation. We hold manuals for Non-SENSEI, RH180 Hybrid, SENSEI and SENSEI RX, and each one gets its own reading of code 10 — what Rinnai documents, what you can safely check yourself, and what the repair should cost.
What each manual actually says
The table above compares 4 series in four columns, which is enough to route you and not enough to explain anything. This is the Rinnai wording behind each row, one entry per manual, so you can see where the 4 readings of code 10 agree and where they part company.
Non-SENSEI — Air supply or exhaust blockage
The heater cannot move combustion air as it expects. This is the clearest place where the Non-SENSEI table is shorter than the newer ones: Rinnai states that the condensate trap cause belongs to SENSEI and SENSEI RX/CX units only, so on this generation code 10 is about the vent system and the air path — clearances, vent materials, joints that have pulled apart, equivalent vent length, a stuck check valve behind the fan, or debris in the heat exchanger.
RH180 Hybrid — Air supply or exhaust blockage
The RH180 cannot move combustion air and exhaust the way it expects. Rinnai marks the entire remedy for this code "licensed professional only", and the list is the vent system: anything blocking the vent, the inlet screen or the combustion air assembly, vent components that are not properly connected, reductions in the vent, a blocked fan, and whether the vent length and combustion air meet the National Fuel Gas Code. Rinnai specifies listed 4-inch B-vent for this appliance.
SENSEI — Air supply or exhaust blocked, or the condensate trap is full
The heater cannot move combustion air as it expects. On the SENSEI — a condensing generation — the same code also covers a backed-up condensate trap. Rinnai's causes run from a frozen or clogged condensate line and a dirty inlet air filter, through vent obstructions and equivalent-length problems, to a failing fan motor or a blocked heat exchanger.
SENSEI RX — Air supply or exhaust blocked, or the condensate trap is full
The heater cannot move combustion air the way it expects to. On the SENSEI RX the same code also covers a condensate trap that has backed up — a feature of the condensing generation that Rinnai's older non-condensing units do not have. Rinnai's list of causes runs from a frozen condensate line and a dirty inlet air filter through vent obstructions to a failing fan motor.
Does it matter which Rinnai you have?
Non-SENSEI, RH180 Hybrid, SENSEI and SENSEI RX all route code 10 the same way: a professional, at $0–$900. That makes it one of the Rinnai numbers you can act on before working out which unit you own.
Which Rinnai do you have?
On the 4 series that report code 10, the model number on the rating label starts C, RC, RU, RUC and RUR — match yours against the 78 listed below. You can also use the full model-number decoder.
