Remote controller (temperature controller)
The panel you set the temperature on, and on several brands the only place an error code is displayed at all. When it fails you can lose the code and the controls at the same time.
What it does
More than set a temperature. On most tankless units the controller is a two-way device: it sends your setpoint to the control board and displays what the board reports back, including diagnostic codes, flow rate and, on some models, the maintenance history.
That second job is why a controller fault is more annoying than it sounds. On Takagi’s non-condensing range, for example, a unit without a remote signals faults by flashing a red LED a set number of times — and the flash counts are not unique, so an ignition failure and a flame loss look the same. The remote is what turns that into a number you can look up.
How it shows up in the codes
Navien reports a stuck or unresponsive keypad as E593, and a loss of communication between the unit and its main panel as E782. Takagi gives remote controller communication failure its own number, code 741, on both its condensing and non-condensing ranges.
Worth separating the two cases: a key fault means the panel is there and one button is misbehaving; a communication fault means the unit and the panel have stopped talking, which is as often the cable or a connector as either device.
Why it fails
Location, mostly. Controllers get mounted in bathrooms and utility rooms, where they meet steam, splashes and condensation. Water behind the panel is the common cause of a key reading as permanently pressed. The other failure is the low-voltage cable run between the panel and the unit — pinched during a renovation, or corroded at a connector in a damp space.
What you can check
- Look for anything physically pressing on the panel, and for condensation or water staining on or behind it.
- Note whether the display is blank, frozen, or showing the code. That distinction narrows a communication fault from a key fault before anyone arrives, and it is free.
- If the unit still heats water normally and only the panel misbehaves, say so — it points at the panel rather than the board.
Why this is not a DIY part
The controller is wired to the control board on a low-voltage run that usually passes through the unit’s casing, so replacing one means opening a gas appliance even though the panel itself is on a wall somewhere else. On some models the new controller also has to be paired or have parameters set before the unit will accept it.
What a replacement usually costs
$60-300 for the controller. $150-500 installed. If the fault is the cable rather than either end, it can be cheaper — which is worth asking about before agreeing to a new panel.
