Navien tankless water heater code E030
Exhaust overheating. Code E030 means the same thing on all 2 Navien series documented here — but the fix, and what it costs, is still worth reading for your exact unit.
What code E030 means on each Navien series
| Series | What it means | Verdict | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPE-2 | Exhaust overheating | Call a pro | $150–$1,400 |
| NPE-A / NPE-S | Exhaust overheating | Call a pro | $0–$1,400 |
Each row opens the full page for that generation. We hold manuals for NPE-2 and NPE-A / NPE-S, and each one gets its own reading of code E030 — what Navien documents, what you can safely check yourself, and what the repair should cost.
What each manual actually says
The table above compares 2 series in four columns, which is enough to route you and not enough to explain anything. This is the Navien wording behind each row, one entry per manual, so you can see where the 2 readings of code E030 agree and where they part company.
NPE-2 — Exhaust overheating
The flue gas is too hot: Navien shuts the water heater down when the exhaust temperature exceeds 149°F (65°C). On a condensing unit the exhaust is supposed to be cool — that is where the efficiency comes from — so a hot flue means heat is going up the vent instead of into your water. Navien's remedies are the same two as for E016: clean the cold water inlet filter, and flush the heat exchanger.
NPE-A / NPE-S — Exhaust overheating
Navien gives the threshold: the heater shuts down when the flue temperature exceeds 149°F (65°C). The remedies are the same three as E016, and in the same order, starting with the 30-minute power-off that this generation documents and the NPE-2 does not. That the fix for an exhaust overheat is descaling tells you where the heat is going: a scaled heat exchanger stops transferring heat into the water, so it leaves up the flue instead.
Does it matter which Navien you have?
NPE-2 and NPE-A / NPE-S all route code E030 the same way: a professional, at $0–$1,400. That makes it one of the Navien numbers you can act on before working out which unit you own.
Which Navien do you have?
On the 2 series that report code E030, the model number on the rating label starts NPE — match yours against the 13 listed below. You can also use the full model-number decoder.
