Condensate neutralizer

A cartridge of limestone chips that raises the pH of condensate before it reaches your drain. It is a consumable with a service life, it gets forgotten, and on some Noritz models the heater counts down to its replacement and then stops.

What it does

A condensing water heater extracts so much heat from its exhaust that the water vapour in the flue gas condenses back to liquid. That liquid is not clean water. It carries dissolved combustion products and comes out acidic — typically pH 3 to 5, roughly vinegar.

Several litres of that a day, poured into a drain, will attack cast iron pipe, mortar, and a septic system’s bacteria. The neutralizer is a plastic housing packed with limestone or magnesium oxide chips that the condensate trickles through on its way out. The acid dissolves a little of the media and comes out closer to neutral.

Dissolving the media is how it works, which is why it is a consumable rather than a fitting.

It gets forgotten, and some units will not let you

Most manufacturers say to check it annually and leave it at that, so it does not get checked. Noritz’s NCC199 and NRC111 are unusual: they count it. Those models carry two codes for nothing but the cartridge’s age — 92, the life cycle warning, and 93, the life cycle has ended — and a third, 29, for the neutralizer or its drain being blocked.

That is a manufacturer conceding the part gets ignored and building a countdown into the appliance. If your heater is showing 92 you have notice; 93 is the notice expiring.

What happens when it clogs or expires

Spent media stops neutralising, so the acid goes to your drain untreated — which is a problem you do not see until a pipe fails. A physically blocked cartridge is more immediate: the condensate backs up into the flue path, and the appliance reports it as a combustion or air-flow fault rather than as a drain problem. This is why a blocked condensate route shows up on several brands as a vent code.

Replacing it

This is one of the genuinely homeowner-serviceable parts on a condensing heater — it sits below the unit in the condensate line, not inside the cabinet, and it comes apart without touching gas or mains electricity. Noritz’s own instruction for codes 92 and 93 is to follow the instructions supplied with the replacement neutralizer, which differ between housings.

Cut the power and close the water first, catch what drains out of it, and check the line downstream of the cartridge while it is off — a slow drain is often the pipe rather than the media.

Checking the media rather than the calendar

Fresh limestone chips are white and loose. Spent media is grey, packed, and often a solid crust. If you can tip the housing and hear chips move, there is life in it; if it pours out as a cake, there is not.

What a replacement usually costs

$40-150 for a cartridge or a refill of media, depending on whether you are replacing the housing or just repacking it. Refill media is much cheaper than a complete unit and fits most housings, which is worth knowing before buying a whole assembly.
