Rinnai Non-SENSEI Code 02
No burner operation during freeze protection. The heater tried to light its burner to keep itself from freezing and could not. It exists only on this generation. What makes it worth acting on quickly is not the code but the job it failed at: on a unit that cannot fire in freezing weather, the next failure is a split heat exchanger. Rinnai's diagnosis is the full ignition checklist — gas supply and pressure, gas type, igniter spark, flame rod condition — and then combustion and venting.

Call a licensed plumber
A gas and ignition fault, so the unit is not yours to open. What you can do in the next ten minutes matters more than the code: confirm gas is actually reaching the house, and protect the unit from freezing until someone arrives.
Typical cost: $150–$900

What the manual says
The meaning above is transcribed from the manufacturer's diagnostic documentation for the Non-SENSEI — not averaged across the brand.

What you can safely check
Before anything else: if you smell gas, stop here, leave, and call your gas utility.
- Check that another gas appliance in the house works — a range burner is the quickest test that gas is reaching the property.
- If the unit runs on propane, check the tank gauge. An empty or under-sized tank produces exactly this in cold weather.
- Confirm the unit still has power and the isolation valves are open, so its electric freeze protection can keep working.
- If freezing weather is forecast and the unit cannot fire, drain it per the owner's manual rather than leaving it full.
- Book a licensed professional. Everything past these checks is the gas and ignition system.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no code 02 on a newer Rinnai?
Rinnai only assigns code 02 on the Non-SENSEI generation. On a SENSEI or SENSEI RX a failure to light shows as code 11, whatever the unit was trying to do at the time.
Is code 02 an emergency?
Not by itself, but it is time-sensitive in freezing weather. The unit reports it because its freeze protection could not run, and a frozen heat exchanger is a far more expensive repair than the ignition fault behind it.
