Tankless Water Heater Not Working After a Power Outage

A tankless heater is a computer with a burner attached, so it does not simply resume. Most post-outage faults are a tripped protective device or an interrupted cycle — but a few are the outage having damaged something.

Start with power, not with the heater

Obvious and still the answer most of the time:

  • The breaker. Outages often end with a surge, and breakers trip on the way back up rather than on the way down.
  • The GFCI outlet. Many units are on one, and it may be a receptacle in another room entirely — a garage, a bathroom, an outdoor socket feeding a chain. A tripped GFCI upstream leaves the heater dead with its own breaker perfectly fine.
  • A blank controller almost always means no power, not a dead unit.

If the display is lit, power is not your problem and the rest of this page applies.

An interrupted cycle is not a fault

If the outage happened while the unit was mid-task, some models stop and wait rather than guess. Rinnai gives that its own number — code 03, a power interruption during bath fill — and the remedy is a reset from the controller rather than a repair. Rinnai adds a useful limit: if it returns after three resets, stop resetting and treat the control board as the next suspect.

That is the good case. Clear the code, run a hot tap, and you are done.

Grounding faults show up after outages

This one is worth knowing because it is counter-intuitive. Several codes on this site have “check that the electrical cord is properly grounded” as their only owner-facing instruction — Navien names it for false flame detection, flame loss, and a PCB fault. Rinnai has a dedicated grounding code, code 19, and notes that when it appears the instant water starts flowing, there is a short in one of the unit’s own components.

A surge on restoration, or work done on the supply during the outage, can leave a heater on a circuit that is no longer properly grounded — and the symptom is a flame-sensing or board fault rather than anything that looks electrical. If an electrician was near your panel, say so.

If the outage was in freezing weather

Then the priority changes. A tankless heater’s freeze protection is electric — no power means no protection — and a unit that sat without power through a hard freeze may have ice in it, or damage from ice that has since thawed.

Do not force it to run. Look for water under the unit or staining on the wall behind it before doing anything else, and if the unit reports a leak, switch it off at the breaker and leave it off. Rinnai gives one generation a code for exactly this failure to protect itself, code 02, and the reason to treat it as urgent is not the ignition fault but the split heat exchanger that follows.

How to winterize a tankless water heater

What to do, in order

  1. Check the breaker, then the GFCI — including receptacles in other rooms.
  2. If the display is lit, note the code before clearing anything.
  3. Clear an interrupted-cycle code from the controller. Once, then again if needed, and stop at the third.
  4. If the outage was during a freeze, look for water before you look for a reset.
  5. If the code involves gas, ignition, venting or overheating, stop and book a professional — an outage does not change what those codes mean.
