Noritz NRCP Code Er44

Possible pump failure. Noritz's description for this code on this generation is exactly that — possible pump failure — with a one-line remedy: check pump. This is the recirculation pump built into the cabinet. The second generation renames the same number to "recirculation abnormality" and gives it three remedies instead of one, so a page written for an NRCP1112 or NRCP982 is describing a broader fault than this.

Part replacement

The verdict

Replace a part

A pump inside the cabinet of a gas appliance, so it is a service call, and the pump is one of the more expensive parts in this range. Before booking, work out whether you have lost recirculation only or hot water entirely — they lead to different conversations.

Typical cost: $200–$900

What the manual says

The meaning above is transcribed from the manufacturer's diagnostic documentation for the NRCP — not averaged across the brand.

Source: Noritz Service Manual — NRCP111-DV / NRCP98-DV (Rev. 09/19) (p. 62), read Sep 2026 — the manufacturer's own documentation for this exact series.

What you can safely check

  1. Check whether you still get hot water at a tap after the normal wait — if you do, it is recirculation you have lost, not heating.
  2. Note whether the pump makes any sound when the unit calls for recirculation.
  3. Book a service call.

Frequently asked questions

My NRCP1112 shows Er44 and the description does not match this page.

It will not. Noritz changed this code between generations: on the NRCP111 and NRCP98 it is "possible pump failure" with one remedy, and on the NRCP1112 and NRCP982 Eco TOUGH it is "recirculation abnormality" covering the return line filter, the recirculation setting and the pump. Read the Eco TOUGH page for those models.
