Navien NPE-A / NPE-S Code E438
Circulation pump fault. The circulation pump is not doing what the unit expects. This generation gives owners more to work with than the NPE-2 does: Navien splits the remedy by system type — for an external pump, make sure all water supply and return lines are open; for an internal one, check the direction of the 2-way valve. The NPE-2 manual reduces the same code to a single line about whether the pump is operating.
Part replacementThe verdict
Replace a part
Start with the valves. A closed isolation valve on a return line produces this code and costs nothing to fix, and Navien names it first for external systems. A failed pump is a real part.
Typical cost: $0–$800

What the manual says
The meaning above is transcribed from the manufacturer's diagnostic documentation for the NPE-A / NPE-S — not averaged across the brand.

What you can safely check
- If you have an external recirculation system, walk the loop and confirm every supply and return valve is fully open — Navien's own first check.
- Check anything that was shut off during recent plumbing work and never reopened.
- Clean the cold water inlet filter while you are there.
- If the loop is open and the code stays, book a service call — the internal 2-way valve orientation is not an owner adjustment.
Frequently asked questions
Does this code mean my recirculation pump is dead?
Not necessarily, and on this generation Navien says so more clearly than on the NPE-2. For an external system its first instruction is to check that all supply and return lines are open — a valve someone closed and forgot produces the same code as a failed pump, and costs nothing.
