Navien NPE-2 Code E003
Ignition failure. The heater ran its ignition sequence and never established a flame. Navien's own first instruction to the owner is the simplest one: make sure the main gas supply valve is open. Beyond that, ignition failures come down to gas getting to the burner, the igniter producing a spark, and the flame sensor confirming it — none of which is reachable without opening a sealed gas appliance.

Check that gas is actually reaching the unit — that is the whole of what Navien asks an owner to do here. If the gas is on and it still will not light, the diagnosis moves inside the cabinet, to the igniter, the flame rod, and gas pressure. Expect a service call, and more if a component is replaced.

What you can safely check
Before anything else: if you smell gas, stop here, leave, and call your gas utility.
- If you smell gas at any point, stop: leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
- Confirm the main gas supply valve to the heater is open — handle in line with the pipe. This is Navien's own step one.
- Check whether other gas appliances in the house work. If nothing gas-fired runs, the supply is the problem.
- On propane, check the tank level.
- Do not open the front panel or test the igniter yourself.
Frequently asked questions
How is E003 different from E012?
E003 means it never lit. E012 is flame loss — it lit and the flame went away or stopped being detected. They overlap in causes but E003 points harder at ignition and gas supply.
Should I keep pressing reset?
No. Each reset asks a gas appliance to try to light again with the fault still present. Two failures is the point to stop and call someone.
